The great personal tragedy that is Claude
A few years ago, if someone had told me there would be this cool CLI tool to which you can not only talk like a normal person, but it can come up with solutions to your problems and implement them. I wouldn’t have just not believed them; my mind would have been completely blown, because, let’s face it, Claude/Codex, etc., are generational tools. They are the worst they will ever be right now, and right now they are better than what I want them to be.
Dear reader, before we continue, I must warn you about the looming emotional vomit this is going to be. I will never be proud of this piece of ‘literature’ nor will I ever denounce it as complete nonsense.
Claude is amazing, but it also sits at the centre and is the root of all my misery at this point in my life.
A great chunk of my self-worth comes from the work I do. The effort I put into things in ideation, execution and even delivery. The workout my brain used to do to find the most idiomatic way to write a line of code while trying to make it sound like grammatically correct code so that I don’t need to write comments. Now “Claude” does this for me. Am I generally satisfied witch what it writes, sometimes yes but mostly not. Do I have the will and strength to go back and put in the effort to read its code and make it more graceful? No.
An apparent Frenchman (AI) who has managed to learn everything there is to learn on the internet. Does things that were previously hard in a matter of minutes. Which means everyone with access uses it to do everything. From Emails to texts, everything is written by Claude. The human connection I used to have at work suddenly reduced to whatever talking to a GenAI model is.
One might argue that work is not the place you go to find human connection. I call these people delusional. Forming meaningful relationships is so intrinsic to the human condition that we found it appropriate to give a generative AI model a persona.
In all fairness, I probably am just cribbing about AI replacing me, the same way weavers found soulless machines making clothes abhorrent. But honestly, I am just annoyed.
Claude is amazing, so I must find new hobbies which are “social”.
